How Technology Is Changing Dentistry (Right Here on the South Coast)
If your idea of the dentist still involves trays of impression goo, weeks waiting for a crown and multiple appointments for something that seems simple — dentistry has changed a lot.
Digital technology is transforming how we examine, plan and carry out treatment, and much of it is available right here on the NSW South Coast.
At Tidy Tooth, investing in technology has long been part of how we work. Not because new equipment is exciting (though some of it is pretty cool), but because the right tools make dentistry simpler, faster and more comfortable for the person in the chair.
1. Goodbye impressions, hello digital scanning
An intraoral scanner captures a detailed 3D picture of your teeth and gums in minutes — no tray, no gagging, no waiting for it to set. That scan feeds straight into planning and design, including our CEREC same-day crown workflow.
2. CEREC has changed what "getting a crown" looks like
Traditionally a crown meant preparing the tooth, taking an impression, wearing a temporary, sending the case to a lab and coming back weeks later.
With CEREC we scan, design and mill the crown in-house — for suitable cases, in a single visit. Dr Steve Tangney — who leads our digital dentistry and completed the Masters of CEREC program — explains how it works in our FAQs and videos, and Dr Molly Wilcox has also completed advanced CEREC training.
3. We make restorations right here at the practice
Once a restoration is designed, our milling unit shapes it from a block of dental ceramic — and yes, you can watch the machine make your tooth. Our workflow also uses SpeedFire technology to finish zirconia crowns on the spot. Much of the process happens under one roof, which means a far more streamlined appointment for you.
4. Cleaner cleans
Technology isn't only about making new teeth. Our hygiene team uses Airflow — a fine jet of warm water, air and powder — to lift plaque and staining gently and efficiently as part of your check & clean. Patients who dread scraping tend to notice the difference immediately.
5. It all works together
The biggest change isn't one machine — it's that scanning, design, milling and finishing now connect into one digital process. That's what makes implant planning more precise, clear aligner treatment more predictable and restorative work faster.
Does more technology mean the dentist does less?
Definitely not. Technology is a tool, not a replacement for clinical judgement. Your dentist still examines, diagnoses, plans and decides what's right for you — which is why we pair our investment in equipment with ongoing training for the whole team. The machines are clever. The people using them matter more.
