Why Professional Cleans Matter (Even If You Brush Really Well)

"But I brush really well!"

We love hearing that — and we mean it. Consistent brushing and flossing at home is the single most important thing you can do for your teeth. Keep doing it.

The honest bit: even with a great routine, there are areas in every mouth where plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) that no toothbrush or floss can remove. That's where a professional clean comes in.

What a professional clean removes that brushing can't

Plaque is soft and brushable for the first day or so. Once it mineralises into calculus it bonds to the tooth, usually just under the gumline and between the back teeth. From there it can only be removed with professional instruments.

Left in place, calculus irritates the gums, which is how gum disease gets started — often without any pain to warn you.

What happens at a clean at Tidy Tooth

Most routine cleans at Tidy Tooth are with one of our oral health therapistsAnna-Liisa, Zoe, Mayomi and Mickayla — working alongside your dentist. A typical appointment includes:

  • A look at your gums and teeth — checking for inflammation, bleeding points and early decay.
  • Removing calculus and plaque above and below the gumline.
  • Airflow cleaning — a fine jet of warm water, air and powder that lifts staining and soft plaque gently, and is a lot more comfortable than old-school scraping and polishing.
  • Personalised advice — the specific spots you're missing, and the tools that suit your mouth (floss, interdental brushes, water flossers).

Cleans are usually paired with your check-up, so any early problems are picked up at the same visit. Read more about a check & clean.

How often should you have a clean?

For most people, every six months works well. If you've had gum disease, wear braces or aligners, smoke, or build up calculus quickly, we may suggest every three to four months for a while. We'll always tell you why — it's your call.

Not sure where you sit? See how often you really need to see the dentist.

Does a clean hurt?

It shouldn't. Sensitive teeth or inflamed gums can make a clean feel a bit tender, so tell us — we can adjust technique, use Airflow instead of hand scaling, or numb an area if you'd prefer. The more regularly you come, the less there is to remove and the more comfortable each visit is.

What it costs

We'll always give you the cost before we start, and we can claim from your health fund on the spot. Check-ups and cleans are usually covered under general dental extras. If you'd like to spread the cost of a bigger plan, see our payment options.

Think of a clean as a maintenance appointment for your smile: a little attention now that saves a lot of dentistry later.
